Hoi An (2021)
Hoi An, Quang Nam
Vietnam
In January 2021, Hội An, Vietnam’s UNESCO-listed ancient town, lay unusually silent amid the early COVID-19 pandemic. Typically vibrant with glowing lanterns, bustling markets, and tourists exploring its historic streets, the town was nearly deserted. Shuttered shops, empty tailoring houses, and a quiet Thu Bồn River reflected the global crisis’s impact. The absence of crowds cast a haunting stillness over the iconic Japanese Bridge and colorful shophouses, yet Hội An’s timeless beauty endured. The serene, almost melancholic atmosphere offered a rare glimpse of the town’s charm without its usual liveliness, underscoring its resilience and cultural depth in the face of unprecedented challenges.
